What is a PTE Write Essay task?

You'll be given an opinion prompt and 20 minutes to write a 200–300 word essay arguing your side. Pearson's AI scores it on 7 traits (no human review). Almost every prompt is one of two types: problem & solution or positive & negative — and our 4-paragraph template handles both.

    20 minutes

Hard timer. Plan 3 min, write 14, proofread 3.

    200–300 words

Anything outside this range = automatic Form score of 0.

    4 paragraphs

Intro · Body 1 · Body 2 · Conclusion. Same scaffold every time.

The 7 traits that get scored

    • Content/6

Addresses every part of the prompt with clear, on-topic ideas.

    • Development, structure & coherence/6

Logical 4-paragraph flow with intro, two bodies and conclusion.

    • Linguistic range/6

Varied sentence types and discourse markers.

    • Form/2

Strict 200–300 words. Single response. No bullet points.

    • Grammar/2

Wide range of structures used accurately.

    • Vocabulary range/2

Topic-specific, academic word choice — no repetition.

    • Spelling/2

British or American — consistent throughout.
