    Overview

    • Type of recording:

      audio or video

    • Length of recording:

      15–60 seconds

    • Number of summaries:

      4 paragraphs (only 1 correct)

    • Number of these tasks in each test:

      2–3

    • Total time for all listening tasks:

      31–39 minutes

Highlight Correct Summary tests your ability to comprehend, analyse and combine information from a short academic recording and identify the single paragraph that best summarises what you heard. After a 6-second countdown the recording (audio OR video) plays once — you cannot pause or replay it. Take notes while you listen, then choose the paragraph that best matches the main ideas and supporting points.

    • Read at least one of the four summaries quickly before the recording starts to get the topic.
    • Take notes of main ideas and key supporting details on your erasable booklet.
    • Eliminate paragraphs that contradict, add unmentioned info, or focus only on details.
    • Scored as correct/incorrect — there is NO negative marking, so always pick something.

Top Strategies for Success in Highlight Correct Summary

    Eliminating false options

In Highlight Correct Summary tasks, it's important to eliminate false options. Practise spotting their three common patterns: different meaning, added information, and focusing only on details.

The three patterns of WRONG summaries — learn to spot them fast.

    Having a different meaning

Sometimes whole sentences directly contradict the recording. In other cases only a few words are wrong (e.g. everyone believes that… vs. some people believe that…). Check subjects/objects, time scale and sequence, arguments for/against, proportions and percentages.

    Presenting additional information

If a summary mentions details that were not in the recording, it is incorrect. Take notes while listening — if the summary mentions nuclear and solar power but you only noted nuclear power, the summary is likely wrong.

    Focusing only on details

If a summary omits the main ideas and talks only about supporting points, it is an ineffective summary. For example, only mentioning population growth when the recording was about different effects of urbanisation.

    Practice tips

    Build the habit
    1. 1

Find some podcasts or lectures on academic topics:

      • Listen to ~30 seconds, take notes of the main ideas, then write a one-sentence summary. Build up to 90 seconds.
      • Come back to your summary a few days later. Listen again and refine it.
    2. 2

Practise reading quickly for general information. Find five academic paragraphs (~50 words each) and try to read each in 10 seconds to grasp the gist. Then re-read carefully to check.

Quick tips — Do this, not that

    • Tip 01

You should use abbreviations, key words and symbols to capture the main ideas.

You shouldn't try to write everything you hear.

    • Tip 02

You should listen for meaning, not individual words.

You shouldn't be distracted by unfamiliar words — focusing on them means you miss more important details.

    • Tip 03

You should always select an answer.

You shouldn't leave the task unanswered — guessing is better than not answering when you're unsure.

    • Tip 04

You should choose a summary based on the information you actually heard.

You shouldn't choose a summary just because it contains some of the same words or ideas.

    • Tip 05

You should listen carefully before deciding what to choose.

You shouldn't decide based on your own knowledge — everything you need is in the recording.

    • Tip 06

You should consider each summary carefully.

You shouldn't reject a summary because of grammar or vocabulary — summaries are wrong only because of the IDEAS they contain.

    • Tip 07

You should keep an eye on the listening-section timer.

You shouldn't spend too much time on one task.

    Points to remember

    Listening tasks
    • 1

Be prepared to be flexible with your ideas while you listen

Sometimes it's easy to think you have identified all the key information after the first part of the recording, but you might change your mind later on. Always listen carefully until the end.

    • 2

Manage your time across the whole listening section

Listening items (apart from Summarize Spoken Text) are not timed individually. You will have between 31 to 39 minutes for all the listening items. Make sure you practise managing your time effectively across all the tasks.

Quick Tips for a Better Score

Take notes and match them to the correct summary

Don't try to read all four options before or during the recording — there is too much text and it will distract you. Instead, note down the key ideas on your erasable note-board booklet as you listen (key words and phrases, numbers, names and dates, and anything the speaker emphasises through stress and intonation).

Then read the four options and match the option that is closest in detail to your notes.

Example: short notes on the booklet matched against the correct highlighted summary
    How this question is scored

Your response is judged on your ability to comprehend, analyse and combine information from the recording and identify the most accurate summary. Your response is scored as correct or incorrect — no credit is given for no response or an incorrect response.

    Notes:
    • This question type contributes to BOTH your Listening and Reading scores.
    • Your Speaking and Writing skills are not tested by this question type.
    • There is NO negative marking — always pick something.

These tasks are 1 or 0. No partial credit, no penalties. Always answer.

    What raises your score
    • Take 2–3 keyword notes during the audio — choose by your notes, not memory.
    • For Highlight Correct Summary, scan summaries during playback for keywords.
